Introduction
Overview
In the nineteenth century, Ethiopian rulers rebuilt imperial authority amid regional rivalry and the advance of European colonialism. Victory at Adwa preserved independence, but expansion and centralisation also reshaped the lives of people within the empire. War, occupation and reform later tested the monarchy until revolution ended it in 1974.
