What it means
The Third Crusade followed Saladin's victory at Hattin and his recapture of Jerusalem in 1187. Frederick Barbarossa, Philip II of France, and Richard I of England took part, though Barbarossa died before reaching the Holy Land. The campaign recovered Acre and preserved a coastal crusader presence, but it did not retake Jerusalem.
